Huntsville International Airport (FAA LID, IATA: HSV, ICAO: KHSV), also known as Carl T. Jones Field, is a commercial airport located 10 miles southwest of downtown Huntsville, Alabama, United States. It covers 2,428 hectares of land with an elevation of 629 feet or 192 meters Above Mean Sea Level.

Huntsville Airport is the largest civilian airport in North Alabama, owned by Huntsville/Madison County Airport Authority, serving 458,960 passengers in 2021, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

The airport is known throughout 18 counties for its outstanding customer service, advanced technologies, and convenient facilities.

The airport has two runways giving non-stop service to 14 destinations in the country, including Atlanta, Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa, and two airports in Washington D.C. – Dulles and National.

Huntsville International Airport opened its doors in October 1967 as Huntsville Jetport. It was the third airport in the city and had the second-longest commercial runway in the southeastern United States, measuring 12,600 feet or 3,800 meters.

AirStats Huntsville International Airport has been tracking down numbers of enplanements and deplanements in the facility. In December 2021, AirStats recorded 940,830 passenger enplanements and deplanements in Huntsville Airport.

Six airline companies serve the Huntsville Airport: American Airlines, Breeze Airlines, Delta Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Silver Airways, and United Airlines.

Huntsville International Airport is open 24 hours a day; however, airline ticket counters and food hubs have their hours of operation.

The Airport Authority administration offices are on the second floor of the terminal building. Offices are open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Note that Airport Authority offices are closed on holidays.

History of Huntsville International Airport

In the early 1930s, the original airport was Huntsville Flying Field/ Mayfair Airport.

In 1934, the airport had four grassy runways and no lighting located southwest of today's intersection of Whitesburg Drive and Bob Wallace Avenue.

In 1941, a second airport opened in the south of downtown Huntsville. It has two paved runways, and the old terminal building was made of a wooden shack situated at the northeast end of a runway.

In 1958, the National Weather Service opened its office at the municipal airport.

In 1966, Huntsville Airport’s first scheduled jets were United 727s.

In 1967, Huntsville International Airport started operating and was then located on the west part of the city along Highway 20. In November of the same year, Eastern Airlines scheduled nine departures from the airport each day, while United Airlines had four and Southern Airlines had seventeen.

On September 15, 1968, Dr. Wernher Von Braun and Senator John Sparkman graced the ribbon-cutting ceremony as the airport officially opened its doors to the public.

From 1969 to 1980, Huntsville Airport had non-stop direct flights to Los Angeles, Florida, and Texas during the United States space program. These flights served the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.

In 1989, HSV was the first airport in the United States to install an ASR-9 dual-channel airport surveillance radar system.

On July 10, 2018, the airport administration declared that Frontier Airlines would begin non-stop service to Denver and Orlando in October of the same year with the A320 Family.

Currently, the airport has one terminal building with one concourse level. It has 12 boarding gates, restrooms, gift shops, restaurants, courtesy phones, and public art areas depicting aviation and space explorations.

The main terminal building also houses a hotel, the Four Points by Sheraton, just above the ticketing counters. Adjacent to the main terminal is a SmartPark Parking garage and on its opposite sides are the aircraft control tower and a golf course.

The airport continuously develops its facilities to provide excellent and convenient service. The administration also launched a “Fly Huntsville” jingle that encourages passengers to depart from Huntsville.

Passengers are given free Wi-Fi internet access throughout the airport.

Rental Car Services, Rideshares, Taxis, and Buses are available at the ground transportation center of the facility.

Train transfers are not available in Huntsville.

Travelers must check what items they can bring in their hand-carry and check-in luggage. They should also secure their belongings before and after leaving the aircraft.
